About us…. well how much time do you have? We (N. and J.) are a married couple that recently moved to Philadelphia. I (N.) have a problem with reading more than is good for either one of us and have to realize the impact that human life is having on the earth. I won’t say that our earth friendly choices started because I read “Twinkie Deconstructed” because we bought a hybrid, bought recycled paper goods and some non-toxic cleaning products prior to that but it was the tipping point for us. It has also lead us to call lots of things “chemicals.” You will find we use the term rather loose and indiscriminately to refer to anything that is bad for us. Well learning about the chemical processes used to make our food led to learning about the chemical processes used to grow our food which led me to read “Our Stolen Future” which pretty much sealed our fates as being much more eco-aware. So now instead of zoning out watching “Law & Order” (although we still do that to, I mean we can’t lie to you) we are learning how to cook our food from fresh produce and unprocessed or less processed basics. We have stopped buying store bread entirely and now eat only homemade whole wheat bread but we want to experiment with herbs and cheeses. We have found tons of inspiration from other people’s blogs and love the fact that we can be part of a community of individuals committed to helping themselves and the earth live together. We aren’t going to swear off electricity any time soon but we want to make changes in our lives big and small.
We are slowly eliminating toxic chemical cleaning products (personal and otherwise) from our home. Some of them we have started to make on our own like soap and shaving cream. We are cooking a lot more and you can see our attempts under recipes and we are buying more and more bulk bin items. This has neccessitated some trips to Goodwill in search of glass storage containers but we’ve always been able to find them for under $1 which is great. We read a lot more and watch TV and play on the internet a lot less. We made our first attempt at a container garden this year with some success next year we plan on expanding. I bought a bike and we sold our Xterra. We now own our hybrid that stays parked since J. and I both got company cars through our new jobs.
We try to be amusing, perhaps insightful and enlightening but most of all we hope we encourage others to do something, anything to help the environment.

I also wanted to wish you luck on your tomatoes! I don’t think you’ll have any problems growing them with the plastic bag method. Just make sure the paper towel is moist and not too wet. You don’t want the paper towel to be too wet or the seeds will “drown,” grow bacteria and rot.
If water is dripping from the paper towel it is too wet. If you have a water spray bottle handy, you can try just misting the paper towel. Let me know if you have any problems!
